The new mills look pretty good, and there are several interesting differences between these mills and the originals. It sounds like Dansk channeled the spirit of JHQ and made some innovative decisions to bring these out given today’s market. Here’s some of the interesting facts:

— They are made from acacia wood, not teak

— They feature an adjustable porcelain grinding mechanism suitable for salt as well as pepper, with the grind adjustment at the bottom of the mill at the end of the grinder itself

— They use a new internal nylon sleeve mechanism to attach the top to the bottom, and you fill with peppercorns by pulling the two halves apart

— There are a few design alterations from JHQ’s original. Jane was widened to accommodate the nylon sleeve running down the center. Jack has a more curved shape than the original, which was a purposeful design change.

— Dansk tried to get Peugeot to supply the grinders for these reissues, but they were summarily turned down. Apparently, Peugeot only lets their grinders be used in their own products. I guess they haven’t read my book yet…

Here’s the official photo from Dansk. From left to right: Rosie, Jane, Hank, Audrey, and Jack (previously known as 824, 829, 834, 892, and 856 respectively).

I heard from Dansk and it is true – they are reissuing 5 of Jens Quistgaard’s salt shaker pepper mill combos as part of their Wood Classics series.
