A Wenge Rare Woods Series ice bucket sold today for $345 on eBay.
I have attached an image from the auction. Here is the item description from the listing:
“Designed by the brilliant Jens Quistgaard, who died at the age of 89 on January 4th,2008, as part of the “Rare Woods” series for Dansk, marking Dansk’s entry into the “luxury” domestic goods market in 1962. This object is considered by contemporary collectors to be among the finest created during the international, Post-War ‘Scandinavian Modern’ movement. Due to the expensive wood and intricate construction, the “Rare Woods” buckets were created in very-limited quantities. They were also among Dansk’s most expensive and prestigious offerings. This is one of the largest and most dramatic of the ‘Rare Woods’ forms and appears on the market very infrequently. This beauty will look great with your Jens Risom and Eames furniture, and mixes with Fantoni sculptures, Gambone pottery, and Italian glass (Venini, Mazzega, Cenedese). Enjoy!”
I am also the proud owners of this bucket, and I agree – it is quite beautiful. The one auctioned off is an especially nice example of this design. Mine has much darker wood which makes the grain less pronounced, and a seam split (which is somewhat common on these wenge pieces).

It’s exciting to see a site (and book) dedicated to Danish pepper mills. I had no idea they existed until last year when I found one of the Quistgaard mills at a Palm Springs thrift store. I bought it for $1.99, and I saw someone sold the same one on eBay recently for $200. How cool! Thanks for sharing your information on them.
