The Wallpaper magazine article mentioned a Christie’s auction for a pair of brass candlesticks that sold for $4,375. I figured these must be some huge prototype or something but they seem to be the familiar candlesticks that were part of the early Dansk line for many years. A pair is on eBay right now with a Buy it Now price of $179, and sometimes they sell for less than that. I probably paid $40 or so for mine. The price is SO high I can’t help but wonder what is going on with that.
The Christie’s listing says they are in brozne and that they have a heavy patina. Perhaps that is the key. Judging from the photos, they do look like they have a different look than the usual brass pieces. If they are indeed a rare bronze casting, that could be why they went for so much. However, I would expect that the listing would mention this fact as part of the provenance if indeed they were a one-off or something like that. They could just be tarnished brass, though…
Anyone have any ideas???
