How It’s Made: Pepper Mills

05.23.09 | 1 Comment

How It’s Made is one of my favorite TV shows.  I like making things, and it’s great to see how things are really made  – by  people who actually know what they are doing.

Their latest episode takes the viewer inside the Peugeot factory to show how they make their legendary pepper grinding mechanisms.  It’s a great segment – a must see for any pepper mill collector.  You can watch an edited clip of it at The Science Channel website.  The full broadcast version of the segment goes (briefly) into how they mill the wood on a lathe and assemble the mills.

The show doesn’t talk about the brands they profile, but in this case you can clearly see the branding on the mills they are making.  Peugeot has been making mills since 1842, and is recognized as the best grinders you can get.  Dansk used Peugeot mechanisms almost exclusively in their early mills.  I go into more detail about the history in my book, Danish Pepper.

I have some of their current mills for sale at the Danish Modern Store.
