My friend and cousin John Rush died 10 years ago this weekend. I cannot believe it has been that long.
Since this blog is about design, I’ll just mark the occasion by saying that he was a great guy: very smart, very funny, and an amazing musician. He was always in search something cooler and better in its own way, and his presence made the world a far better place. Unfortunately, his search ended and then all of a sudden the world was a worse place.
I’m posting a song so everyone can enjoy his guitar playing for a few minutes, and a photo for posterity. Listen now.
Here’s to you, John…

Note: I think the song is by the band Bing Ra. I’d be happy to properly credit the music if someone could remind me what it’s called and who deserves the credit.

Hello. I purchased a Nissen ice bucket today at a thrift store for $3. It is very heavy and the wood is very dark. If I had to bet on it, I’d say it is made of wenge. The “handles” on the lid remind me of the holes in a bowling ball only there are 4 holes instead of 3. The “handles” on the sides are also round holes. Is it possible for me to post a photo?
Hi Anybody . . . first post! I have three JHQ mills in my collection which have very distinctive caps – instead of the wood cap with a cork glued on below, these are turned from a single piece of wood, the interior carved out to make them lightweight – almost thimble like. I have yet to encounter any mention of these caps, though I am sure that they have to be quite ‘early;]’ and rare – just way too difficult to produce for mass production, though just the kind of wild detail which Quistgaard would have loved. Anyone got any info??
I spent many fine evenings roaming portland, searching out interesting music- John in the lead. So glad to have known him, and so sad that he’s gone. What an endearing and unique person.
Thanks for posting this, I was missing him today.
