I heard from Dansk and it is true – they are reissuing 5 of Jens Quistgaard’s salt shaker pepper mill combos as part of their Wood Classics series. The new mills look pretty good, and there are several interesting differences between these mills and the originals. It sounds like Dansk channeled the spirit of JHQ and made some innovative decisions to bring these out given today’s market. Here’s some of the interesting facts:
— They are made from acacia wood, not teak
— They feature an adjustable porcelain grinding mechanism suitable for salt as well as pepper, with the grind adjustment at the bottom of the mill at the end of the grinder itself
— They use a new internal nylon sleeve mechanism to attach the top to the bottom, and you fill with peppercorns by pulling the two halves apart
— There are a few design alterations from JHQ’s original. Jane was widened to accommodate the nylon sleeve running down the center. Jack has a more curved shape than the original, which was a purposeful design change.
— Dansk tried to get Peugeot to supply the grinders for these reissues, but they were summarily turned down. Apparently, Peugeot only lets their grinders be used in their own products. I guess they haven’t read my book yet…
Here’s the official photo from Dansk. From left to right: Rosie, Jane, Hank, Audrey, and Jack (previously known as 824, 829, 834, 892, and 856 respectively).

I was praying they wouldn’t reissue the ones I have! (They didn’t). They look reat of course, and I want them all, but I’m not really clear on what Dansk is anymore. Wouldn’t they need to reissue every great Quistgaard and Cyren design to be impactful again? And then reissue the old Lou Dorfsman ads? That would be the best strategy. Dump everything but their greatest hits!
By the way I just ordered your book!

Actually Mark I just read your old post about Jens Quistgaard’s children trying to put some of his designs back into production- I wonder if they had something to do with it. And what are your thoughts?!
Apparently the first re-issues are available for ordering through the Dansk website. Watch them fly off the shelf.
Hi, I have one of the new acacia salt shaker/pepper grinders. They probably have a better grinding mech. than my 1960 version, the wood laminates are larger than with the original teak version, and some lighter sapwood is evident. Made in China. Overall nicely done, but lacking the “teak” look of the originals.
I bought the vintage style salt and pepper mill and I have NO IDEA how to fill it. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME? THANKS, LINK
We just figured ours out! Pull on the two halfs til it splits!
Making an attempt to find a solution one design enthusiast to another. I have been searching all over for help on how to address problems with the grinding mechanism being hard to turn or sometimes stuck. I don’t know wheater I should just get rid if it or if it can be fixed. The mechanism is metal but not labeled pegeout and has no metal bar across and no visible screws. There is no access at the top unless I go through the wood of the salt container and that would off course take some reapir itself. The design I have is the mushroom shape and it feels sad that it is just sitting there not being used.
I have Rosie. I cannot get it open. Anyone know the secret?
I have my mom’s pull apart dansk peppermill, however it is stuck and I can’t get it to separate. Any ideas?
Hello to all the Dansk Salt and Pepper collectors. I have an original 892 with a compromised cap. Is it possible to obtain a teak replacement? If not, can I get a new Audrey cap? The color will be different but I think it will be OK. Thanks…..L
How do I get the pegs out of the sides of the Dansk salt and pepper mill? I need to refill the salt and can’t get the darn thing open! I have an older teak model with the loop on top, which controls the pepper grinder. The salt comes out of holes which encircle the top. Was my mom’s, probably around 1960’s. Thanks.
I have HANK and I’m not sure if it’s original or reissue but regardless…..HOW DO I FILL THE SALT? LOL :))) Please, help!
My original Dansk Mushroom (Audrey 824) will no longer grind pepper.
I can’t believe there isn’t a grinder mechanism that can be bought to be replace the old. There are so many grinders out there that are of the same size.
I also have the mushroom shaped from 1965 wedding gift. Attachment teeth or cogs on grinder are broken off and will not attach to the top salt shaker. How do I get it repaired or get new mechanism? Glenda.mitchell@gmail.com
Hi I purchased a teak pepper grinder like the short fat one you have pictured .the salt goes in the top but I cannot figure out where to put the pepper there is a small red plug in the bottom however hole is so small you would have to drop one pepper corn at a time in …there has to be a better way Thank you for your help
