The new book by Stig Guldberg titled “Jens Quistgaard, The Sculpting Design” will be officially released on March 8. I can’t recommend it enough.
This book is – by far – the most complete, most beautiful, and best researched book on Quistgaard. And it’s in English.
Phaidon has gone all out in this publication. The spine looks like the wrapping on a Kobenstyle pitcher. This is a very high quality book with beautiful photos, reproductions of old catalogs, and a ton of information.
The first part is a very deep and detailed survey of the man’s life and work. Full of photos, it includes many rare or one off pieces he’s designed both before and after Dansk. Quistgaard was a unique individual who lived an amazing life, so Stig had a lot to work with here.
The second part – on bright paper to make the photos really pop – goes deep into the story of many (all?) of the key pieces of his design output. Telling the stories of their creation, manufacture, and impact. It includes many prototypes or one-off designs, giving new insight into his work.
The epilogue gives even more information and includes a small catalog of works for reference.
This substantial book is a must have for fans of Danish design, or really anyone who has interest in design and the people behind the work.
