I’d like to take a break from writing about Danish Modern to recommend a movie. It’s call The Hammer and was created by radio host Adam Carolla. You probably know him from his recent appearance on Dancing with the Stars or from his work with Jimmy Kimmel on the Man Show. However, you should erase any preconceptions of him before deciding whether to watch this movie. You might not appreciate his earlier work, but the movie is an excellent combination of top notch storytelling with a good dose of the philosophical libertarian rants his radio show is best known for.

While his trademark crude humor is present, it’s not the focus of the movie. It’s a semi-autobiographical story of a washed up boxer and carpenter trying to turn his life around, while making new friends and falling in love. It’s as much a boxing flick as it is a comedy as it is a chick flick love story. Since I don’t like boxing movies or chick flicks, it’s impressive how much I loved this one. It’s got a lot of heart and I highly recommend it. Carolla is very good as the lead, and the rest of the cast does a great job. While a knowledge and appreciation of Carolla’s material will give you a headstart towards loving the film (due to Carolla’s somewhat subtle and understated delivery), it is not required. The movie currently has a 96% approval rating by the Rotten Tomatoes community, which is pretty impressive.

I have been a huge fan of Adam since back in the day when he was on Loveline. I recommended this movie to all of my friends (most who were unfamiliar with him) and they all loved it! The Hammer is a nice little film. I wish that it had caught on more while it was still in theaters. Definitely get this DVD! It is hilarious, heartwarming, and everything in between…definitely a movie that reaches out to every type of viewer.
